The scoring similarity is real but a little misleading. Pickleball traditionally awards points only to the serving team, while modern table tennis uses rally scoring (either side can score) and alternates the serve every two points. And of course, one game has you covering a court while the other keeps you rooted at a table.
The paddles are not the same thing
This is where gift buyers slip up. A table-tennis bat is small, light, and covered in grippy rubber for spin; a pickleball paddle is much larger, solid-faced, and built to strike a bigger plastic ball across a net. They are not interchangeable in either direction. The balls differ too: table tennis uses a smooth 40 mm ball, while pickleball uses a larger ball with holesdesigned to fly outdoors. If your recipient plays pickleball, a ping-pong paddle is the wrong gift, however similar the word "paddle" sounds.
