The Best Pickleball Paddles for Kids

A kid's paddle is not a small adult paddle with a cartoon on it. Here is what actually changes, which ones get it right, and the point at which to stop buying them.

By Stephen V. · Updated October 2026 · How we pick

If you want the short answer, buy the Sportbit Kids Pickleball Paddles. It is the pick that is most clearly built as a child's paddle - listed as child-size, small and lightweight, with a carbon fiber face and a bag, for children under 12 - and it comes as either one paddle or two, which covers both the only-child case and the two-siblings case. If this is a stocking rather than a main gift, the Helium POW! paddle does the same job for less than a tin of balls.

Here is what a buyer needs to know first, because almost every kids paddle listing buries it. Three things make a paddle genuinely child-size, and all three are about the handle and the weight rather than the face. A shorter overall paddle means less mass swinging out at the end of a short arm. A lighter head means a seven-year-old can actually stop the swing once it has started. And a smaller grip circumference means their fingers can close around the handle - which decides whether they can hold the paddle properly at all, and is the thing most "kids" paddles get wrong by shipping a full adult 4.25-inch grip in a bright color.

Weight is the one to get right if you only get one right. A paddle that is too heavy for a child does not make them stronger, it changes how they play: they swing from the shoulder instead of the wrist, they stop getting the paddle up in time at the net, and the fun drains out inside a session. Buy equipment that fits the child now rather than something to grow into - a paddle is cheap, and a kid who decides the sport is too hard for them is expensive.

Face material matters much less for a child than the marketing suggests. Carbon fiber and graphite faces grip the ball for more spin and cost more; fiberglass faces are cheaper, give a little more pop, and are completely adequate for a nine-year-old who is still learning to make clean contact. Two picks below are carbon or graphite and four are fiberglass, and the fiberglass ones are not lesser gifts - they are the right gifts for a child who might play twice and might play for ten years.

The rules do not constrain you here, which surprises people. USA Pickleball's rulebook sets a maximum combined paddle length and width of 24 inches with a 17-inch length limit and imposes no weight restriction at all - and it sets no minimum size either, so a child-size paddle is entirely legal, including for sanctioned play if the model is on the approved list. There is no separate junior equipment standard to satisfy. The constraint is your child's hand and arm, not the rulebook, and USA Pickleball's own juniors pages are where to look for a program once they are hooked.

When to stop buying kids' paddles: roughly when the paddle starts looking small in their hand rather than large, which for most children lands somewhere between 10 and 13 and has far more to do with their size than their birthday. The honest signal is the grip - if their hand wraps all the way around the handle and overlaps itself, the handle is now too small and they are losing control to the wrong tool. The last pick on this page is the step-up for exactly that moment: a real adult beginner paddle at a price that does not sting if their interest fades instead.

One safety note worth more than any spec. Pickleball is played in a small space with four people and a hard plastic ball, and children swing with less awareness of where everyone else is standing. Eye protection is the accessory to buy alongside any of these paddles, and the simple court rule - one child per side until they can call their shots - prevents more problems than any paddle choice will.

How these picks were chosen, and what we are not claiming. Every pick is a currently purchasable listing, each one resolved and verified live on the day this page was published. Nobody on this site has handed these paddles to a child, there is no testing program behind Popaddle, and no rating or score on this page is invented - every size, weight, material, age range, count or inclusion claim is repeated from the live listing or from the sources at the foot of the page. The order runs from the most clearly child-specific paddle through the family sets to the step-up, not from cheapest to priciest. Prices move constantly, so every number is pulled live and stamped with the date it was checked.

The picks in detail

Sportbit Kids Pickleball Paddles (Set of 1 or 2) — pickleball gift
#1Top pick

Sportbit Kids Pickleball Paddles (Set of 1 or 2)

Best for: A child under 12 who is going to play properly

This is the pick that takes being a kids' paddle seriously rather than treating it as a decorating exercise. The listing specifies a child-size paddle for kids, small and lightweight, with a carbon fiber face, a bag, and an explicit under-12 age range - and it is sold as either one paddle or two, which is the flexibility most buyers actually need. The carbon face is a genuine extra rather than a markup here: it grips the ball, which helps a child who is learning to keep a shot in the court instead of flat-batting it long. The bag matters more than it sounds for a kid, too, because the paddle that lives in a bag is the paddle that gets to the court.

Skip it if: Skip it if the child is 12 or older and already too big for the paddle - size up to a real adult beginner paddle instead. Skip the two pack if you only need one; the single is the cheaper gift and nothing about it is worse.

Helium POW! Kids Pickleball Paddle — pickleball gift
#2Best value

Helium POW! Kids Pickleball Paddle

Best for: A stocking, a party favor, or a first try at the sport

This is the cheapest genuinely child-specific paddle on the page and the easy yes for a buyer who does not yet know whether the child will take to pickleball. The listing specifies a child-size paddle for children under 12, a lightweight honeycomb core, a graphite strike face and a drawstring bag - which is a real specification rather than a toy one, at a price that makes it a sensible stocking filler rather than a main gift. A honeycomb core is the construction Selkirk's own guidance credits with widening the sweet spot and absorbing the ball, and for a child learning to make clean contact that is exactly the right property to pay for.

Skip it if: Skip it if the child already plays regularly and is asking for something nicer - the Sportbit above is the better paddle and not much more money. Skip it too if you want balls included, which this does not have.

Yoza Kids Pickleball Paddle Set of 2 (Burger & Fries) — pickleball gift
#3Best for two kids

Yoza Kids Pickleball Paddle Set of 2 (Burger & Fries)

Best for: Siblings, cousins, or a birthday where two children need to play each other

Buy this when the real problem is that two children need to play, which is most of the time - one paddle means taking turns, and taking turns is how a seven-year-old loses interest. The listing specifies a set of two lightweight fiberglass paddles with two balls, aimed at children ages 4 to 12 and sold explicitly as a gift. The designs are the point rather than a distraction: a child who thinks their paddle is funny will carry it around the house, and a paddle that gets carried around the house gets used. Fiberglass is the right call at this age too - cheaper, a little livelier, and nothing a young beginner is giving up.

Skip it if: Skip it if one of the two children is a teenager; this tops out at 12 by the listing's own range and a 14-year-old will find it small. Skip it too if you want a carbon face - at this price it is fiberglass, which is honest rather than cheap.

Niupipo Parent & Child Pickleball Set (4 Paddles) — pickleball gift
#4Best for a family

Niupipo Parent & Child Pickleball Set (4 Paddles)

Best for: Two adults and two kids who want to play together

This is the pick when the gift is really for a household. The listing specifies a parent-and-child set of four paddles with four balls and a bag, fiberglass, lightweight, and USAPA approved - so a family of four can play doubles out of one box with nothing left to buy. It is the most cost-effective way onto a court for four people, and the parent-and-child framing is the useful part: the adults are not stuck using child-size paddles and the kids are not stuck swinging adult ones. If you are buying for the family rather than for one child, start here.

Skip it if: Skip it if only one child is going to play - you are paying for three paddles you do not need. Skip it too if the adults in the house already own paddles they like; a dedicated kids' paddle plus the balls you have is the cheaper answer.

Voyager Minecraft Pickleball Set — pickleball gift
#5Best themed set

Voyager Minecraft Pickleball Set

Best for: A kid who will play anything with Minecraft on it

Never underestimate what a licensed theme does to a child's willingness to try a sport. The listing specifies fiberglass paddles, balls and a carry bag, built for kids and youth, in officially branded Minecraft livery - so the whole kit is there, and the part that gets the child outside is the part on the front. For a seven-to-ten-year-old who has not asked for pickleball but has asked for everything else Minecraft, this is a far better bet than a better paddle they have no feelings about. Everything in the box is real equipment rather than a toy: it plays with a standard ball on a standard court.

Skip it if: Skip it if the child has moved past the theme - a licensed paddle they have outgrown is embarrassing rather than fun, and a plain carbon paddle lasts longer. Skip it too if they already play seriously; the Sportbit above is the better paddle for a kid who cares about their shots.

Kids Pickleball Paddle (Pink Unicorn) — pickleball gift
#6Best for a young child

Kids Pickleball Paddle (Pink Unicorn)

Best for: A toddler or young child who just wants to hit something

This is the pick for the youngest end, where the goal is contact and laughter rather than technique. The listing describes a kids' pickleball paddle in a pink unicorn design, positioned as a gift for a toddler and kid - which is the honest brief: short, light, cheerful and single, so a small child can hold it in one hand and does not need a partner to enjoy it. At this age a paddle's job is to make the ball go somewhere about half the time, and any genuinely light child-size paddle does that. Buy it as the second gift alongside a tin of balls and you have an afternoon in the driveway.

Skip it if: Skip it if the child is over about eight and playing with other kids - they will want what their friends have, and the themed sets above do that better. Skip it too if they need a partner paddle; this is a single.

Selkirk Sport SLK Helix Pro Pickleball Paddles — pickleball gift
#7Best step up

Selkirk Sport SLK Helix Pro Pickleball Paddles

Best for: A 12 or 13-year-old who has outgrown a child-size paddle

There comes a point, usually somewhere between 10 and 13, when a kids' paddle starts costing a child shots rather than saving them: their hand wraps the handle and overlaps, and the face is too small for the swing they now have. This is the paddle for that moment. The listing describes a beginner-friendly racket with a thermoformed core and a large sweet spot for easy power, from Selkirk's accessible SLK line, which Selkirk's own guidance aims at new players. It is a genuine adult paddle at a price that does not sting if the interest fades, and it will not need replacing again in a year.

Skip it if: Skip it if the child is still under about ten - an adult handle in a small hand means gripping harder and losing wrist movement, which is the thing a child-size paddle exists to prevent. Skip it too if they already have specific preferences; our Selkirk page covers the range properly.

Frequently asked questions

What size pickleball paddle should a kid use?

Go by the child rather than by a chart. A genuinely child-size paddle is shorter overall, lighter in the head, and - the part most listings skip - slimmer in the grip, so their fingers can close around the handle. USA Pickleball sets a maximum of 24 inches combined length and width with a 17-inch length limit and no weight restriction, and no minimum size at all, so any child-size paddle is legal. The practical test is whether they can still hold the paddle up at the net after twenty minutes. If they cannot, it is too heavy.

At what age can a child start playing pickleball?

Children as young as four play with a light paddle and a soft approach, which is why one of the picks above is sold for toddlers. What changes with age is the court: a small child does better with one person per side and a short rally than with four people in a space the size of a badminton court. USA Pickleball's how-to-play material covers the court and the non-volley zone, and their juniors pages are where to look for an organized program once the child is keen.

Can kids use adult pickleball paddles?

Legally yes, practically not well, and the reason is the grip rather than the weight. An adult handle at about 4.25 inches around is too fat for most hands under roughly 11, and holding a handle you cannot close your fingers around means squeezing harder and losing wrist mobility - which is where touch and control come from. Children also compensate for a heavy paddle by swinging from the shoulder, which is a habit worth not teaching. Wait until the paddle looks small in their hand, then size up.

Does a kid need a carbon fiber paddle?

No. A carbon or graphite face grips the ball for more spin and costs more, and it is a real advantage for a child who is already keeping the ball in play consistently. For a beginner, fiberglass is completely adequate and a little livelier - four of the picks on this page are fiberglass and they are not lesser gifts. Spend the difference on a second paddle so two children can play each other, or on eye protection.

Should I buy one kids' paddle or a set?

A set, almost always, unless the child already has someone to play with. One paddle means taking turns, and taking turns is the fastest way to lose a seven-year-old's interest. A two-paddle set with balls puts two kids on a court immediately; a four-paddle family set does the same for two adults and two children and works out cheaper than buying separately. Buy a single paddle when you are adding to equipment the household already owns.

Do kids need special pickleball shoes?

They need court shoes rather than running shoes, for the same reason adults do - pickleball is a side-to-side sport and running shoes are built to roll the foot forward. That said, children grow out of shoes fast enough that a flat-soled, stable sneaker they already own is a reasonable interim answer in a way it is not for an adult playing three times a week. If they stick with it and start playing indoors, a proper court shoe is the upgrade that matters.

Is a kids' paddle legal for tournament play?

Yes, with one check. USA Pickleball's rulebook sets maximum dimensions and no minimum, so a smaller paddle breaks no rule - but sanctioned play requires the specific model to be on the approved list. The family set above states USAPA approval on its listing; for any paddle, look the model up in USA Pickleball's equipment database before a sanctioned event rather than relying on an article. For school, club and driveway play none of this applies.

What else should I buy with a kids' paddle?

Eye protection first - a hard plastic ball in a small space with children who are still learning where everyone else is standing. Then balls, because they crack, they get lost, and a child will not wait. Beyond that, the useful extras are a bag, so the paddle gets carried rather than left behind, and a portable net if you have a driveway. Our starter-kit checklist lays out the whole list and, more usefully, what you can skip.
